Masters’ Back Porch Chautauqua September 2024

September 15 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Bailey ShawDr. Bailey Shaw is a professor of English at Lincoln Land Community College and author of a book chapter in #Metoo and Modernism published by Clemson University Press.

Shaw will present “Memory and Understanding in the Poetry of Thomas Hardy”. Thomas Hardy, a contemporary of Edgar Lee Masters, grew up in the rural English countryside and like, Masters, wrote novels, plays and poetry, largely influenced by changing societal norms of late 19th and early 20th centuries–a literary period called modernism. Shaw’s discussion assesses literary modernism through contemporary discussions about gender, race and class.

Beckerman-Allen-Dirks, a group of local Petersburg musicians–Wendy Beckerman, Rick Allen and Larry Dirks, will play an eclectic mix of classic rock and Americana covers. Everyone is sure to be entertained by the trio’s carefully-selected covers, superb musicianship, and tight harmonies.

Please Note: all of the Masters on the Back Porch Chautauqua performances will take place on the 2nd floor of 1st & 3rd Boutique and Wine Bar, which does not have an elevator.
